Vizhinjam International Port achieves a significant milestone as it obtains the International Shipping and Port Security (ISPS) code, crucial for international ship operations, as per port officials.
Vizhinjam International Port has attained the essential International Shipping and Port Security (ISPS) code, a vital authorisation bestowed by the International Maritime Organization under the United Nations. A port official highlighted the necessity of this certification for the operation of international ships within the port premises, encompassing various vessels such as high-speed cargo vessels, bulk carriers, and other cargo ships.
The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Water Transport has officially communicated the allocation of the ISPS code, marking a noteworthy achievement for Vizhinjam Port. The ISPS code, developed in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, aims to mitigate security risks prevalent in maritime transportation, thereby enhancing the safety of global shipping operations.
This approval positions Vizhinjam Port in alignment with international security standards, ensuring a secure environment for maritime activities. The construction of Vizhinjam Port progresses through a public-private partnership model, with the Adani Group serving as the private partner in the project’s development.
In October last year, the inaugural ship was flagged-in at the INR 7,700 crore deep-water international Vizhinjam Port, marking a significant milestone in the port’s development journey.
