India reviews fuel, food and shipping amid West Asia tensions.

The Government of India has assured adequate availability of fuel, foodgrains, fertilisers and shipping services amid the evolving situation in West Asia. During an inter-ministerial briefing held on June 1, 2026, officials stated that petrol and diesel stocks remain available across the country and all retail outlets are operating normally. The government also said fuel sales rose by more than 30 per cent in many districts during May 2026 due to increased demand. Shipping operations through the Persian Gulf and Red Sea remain stable, with 245 services recorded in May after peaking at 257 in April.
The government highlighted that the Union Cabinet has approved Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0, which aims to facilitate additional credit flow of ₹2.55 lakh crore, including ₹5,000 crore for airlines, to support businesses affected by the West Asia situation. Officials also noted that foodgrain stocks remain above prescribed buffer norms, with wheat stocks at 513 lakh metric tonnes and rice stocks at 397 lakh metric tonnes as of May 28, 2026. Fertiliser availability was reported to be comfortable, with current stocks at around 199.86 lakh metric tonnes, equivalent to more than 52 per cent of the reassessed Kharif 2026 requirement.
