The Andhra Pradesh state government renamed the upcoming greenfield Bhavanapadu Port as Mulapeta Port on Sunday, thus respecting the sentiments of the local residents of the Srikakulam district. Chief Minister of the state, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, will lay the foundation stone for the upcoming port on April 19.
The farmers from Mulapeta and Vishnuchakram villages had requested the name change since the whole land and displaced families belong to Mulpeta and Vishnuchakram, which have been identified for acquisition. Bhavanapadu village has no scope in the planned port region.
These concerns were voiced by the farmers during the district-level negotiation committee meetings with the Srikakulam district collector. The state government then renamed the port with the same limits. It directed the AP Maritime Board chief executive and Srikakulam district collector to make necessary amendments.
