Around 12 IITs and other premier technical institutions have expressed willingness to collaborate with NHAI on independent proof checking of major bridge designs across National Highway projects.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken an initiative to empanel Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other reputed technical institutions for independent proof checking of hydraulic studies and design of major bridge structures across all new National Highway projects. The initiative aims to ensure that major bridges, which are designed for a service life of 100 years or more, undergo rigorous independent technical review before construction. Around 12 IITs, including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur, along with several other premier institutions, have expressed willingness to collaborate with NHAI on the initiative.
The initiative will enable NHAI to create a nationwide institutional framework for design vetting of critical bridge projects, strengthening quality assurance practices and promoting better design and execution. It will include reviews of structural design calculations, engineering drawings, construction methodologies, geotechnical investigations and hydraulic studies, and will be applied uniformly across projects implemented under various modes of construction. NHAI stated that the move will enhance structural safety, improve design reliability and minimise long-term operational risks, in line with its broader objective of adopting best-in-class engineering practices for a high quality and future-ready National Highway network.
