NPDD and AHIDF support milk procurement, chilling, processing and value addition.
The Government of India is implementing a range of schemes to strengthen and modernise the dairy sector, with a focus on improving milk production and productivity, expanding organised milk procurement, strengthening dairy processing and value addition and improving milk-quality infrastructure.
Under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), financial assistance is provided for milk procurement, milk chilling, milk processing and value addition. The funding pattern is 75:25 for North Eastern Region States, Hilly States and Union Territories and 50:50 for other States for these components. For milk and milk-product testing laboratories, certification and accreditation, the funding pattern is 70:30 for NER States, Hilly States and Union Territories and 50:50 for other States. NPDD also focuses on strengthening village-level cold-chain and milk-testing infrastructure. The scheme is being implemented across the country and its Component A has been extended up to 2027-28.
The Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) is another key Government initiative supporting infrastructure development in the dairy and animal husbandry sectors. Together, these programmes seek to strengthen the dairy value chain from milk collection and chilling to processing and value addition, while improving organised market access for milk producers and supporting a more efficient and sustainable dairy sector.
