Rising tariffs between the US and China may create new export opportunities for India, government officials suggest.
As trade tensions between the US and China escalate, India’s exporters anticipate increased orders, a senior government official said. The latest tariff war saw China retaliate against US duties by imposing levies on American coal, oil, and agricultural equipment, while also launching an antitrust probe into Google.
India previously benefited from the 2018 trade war, becoming the fourth-largest recipient of diverted trade. According to Oxford Economics, India’s share of US electronics imports grew nearly tenfold, driven by Apple’s iPhone production shift. However, the country still lags behind Asian competitors in high-tech sectors like semiconductors.
To capitalise on this shift, the Indian government has adjusted customs duties, aiming to streamline tariffs. Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey stated that the move signals India’s commitment to a simplified trade regime. With key US imports facing low duties, India is positioning itself as a strategic alternative in global supply chains.
