APSEZ secures a five-year contract to manage the container terminal at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Dock.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has received the letter of intent (LOI) for the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the container facility at Netaji Subhas Dock, part of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata. This contract, secured through a competitive bidding process, mandates APSEZ to deploy cargo handling equipment within seven months from the letter of acceptance (LOA).
Netaji Subhas Dock, the largest container terminal on India’s eastern coast, handled approximately 0.63 million TEUs in the fiscal year 2023-24. The terminal serves the hinterland of West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam, the northeastern states, and the landlocked countries of Nepal and Bhutan.
Regular liner services connect the dock to major hub ports such as Singapore, Port Kelang, and Colombo. APSEZ’s involvement is expected to enhance connectivity between Netaji Subhas Dock and its container ports, especially the transshipment hubs at Vizhinjam and Colombo, slated for commissioning this year.
Ashwani Gupta, CEO of APSEZ, expressed that winning the O&M contract underscores the company’s commitment to developing port and logistics infrastructure across India, highlighting the strategic importance of West Bengal. Gupta emphasised APSEZ’s extensive experience in managing container terminals, which will benefit customers and the local population.
