India’s top container port aims for 10M TEU capacity, driven by efficiency and balanced exim trade growth.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is set to achieve a historic milestone by becoming the country’s first port with a 10 million TEU capacity, revealed Unmesh Wagh, Chairperson of JNPA and CMD of the Vadhvan Port Project, in a recent interaction.
Key Highlights:
- Record-Breaking Year:
In 2024, JNPA handled 7.05 million TEU, its highest ever. Wagh credited the port’s growth to a balanced trade ecosystem, efficiency in operations, and strong customer retention despite competitive challenges. - Customer-Centric Approach:
Wagh emphasised JNPA’s reliability in terms of cost transparency, scheduling, and operational efficiency. Unlike transshipment ports, JNPA’s growth aligns closely with the development of its hinterland. - Focus on Vadhvan Port:
The under-construction Vadhvan Port is set to position JNPA among the world’s top 10 container-handling ports, with a capacity of 23.2 million TEU upon completion. - Competitive Edge:
Despite higher transportation costs compared to ports with dedicated freight corridors, JNPA remains a preferred choice due to its negligible allied charges and zero tolerance for inefficiency.
“Doing business with JNPA means certainty—there are no hidden costs. Once someone comes to JNPA, they don’t leave,” said Wagh. With steady growth, a customer-first approach, and the Vadhvan Port Project on the horizon, JNPA is poised to set new benchmarks in India’s maritime and logistics sector.
