The Minister of Ports, Ahammad Devarkovil, announced on Monday that the first ship destined for the Vizhinjam International Seaport (VISL) terminal will reach its destination later than previously scheduled. Initially expected on October 4, the ship’s arrival has been postponed to October 15 due to unforeseen delays at sea.
The vessel commenced its journey from China on August 31, 2023, and was initially set to reach Vizhinjam Port on October 4. However, several setbacks, including typhoons in Shanghai, Vietnam, and Singapore, slowed its progress. With an average speed of 11 nautical miles per hour, the ship could only manage three to five nautical miles per hour in the affected areas.
Upon its eventual arrival at Vizhinjam Port, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Union Minister for Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal will be present to welcome it. The project has been a subject of high expectations for the state’s residents, and a large crowd is anticipated at the port to witness the ship’s arrival. The Vizhinjam project has faced opposition from local fishermen who fear adverse effects on their livelihoods.
