India has exported up to 500,000 metric tons of sugar so far this season, but industry experts warn that meeting the government’s one million-ton export quota may be challenging.
While the country initially allowed limited exports to support mills and stabilise local prices, supply constraints and mill closures—especially in northern India—have slowed shipments. Exports have primarily targeted Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Eastern Africa, with increased demand from Muslim-majority countries ahead of Ramadan.
However, rising domestic prices have made Indian sugar less competitive in global markets, with traders reporting “unrealistic” pricing compared to other suppliers. Despite the current slowdown, experts remain optimistic about a stronger sugarcane crop in the 2025/26 season.
