The Shipping Ministry of India is set to establish a Bureau of Port Security (BPS) that will oversee security audits for both government-owned and private ports. Similar to the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in the aviation sector, the BPS aims to centralise security efforts and minimise redundancies.
Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced the proposal during a recent meeting of the Maritime States Development Council. The BPS will function under the control of a designated authority, akin to how the BCAS operates under the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. This initiative is crucial as the number of private ports increases, ensuring a unified and robust security apparatus across all Indian ports.
