India marks National Maritime Day, spotlighting youth, green growth, and the sector’s role in national development.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways celebrated the 62nd National Maritime Day across India with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and youth empowerment. The theme for 2025, “Prosperous Seas – Developed India and Youth for Blue Economy and Green Growth,” highlighted India’s commitment to building a future-ready maritime ecosystem.
The central event was held in New Delhi, led by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He acknowledged the vital role of seafarers in driving trade and national progress and emphasised the government’s efforts to modernise port infrastructure, boost coastal shipping, and promote India as a global maritime leader.

Activities during the week included blood donation drives, flag pinning ceremonies, sports competitions, and tributes to fallen seafarers. Awards were conferred on outstanding contributors in the sector.
Interacting with cadets, the minister encouraged young maritime professionals—especially women—to lead India’s maritime transformation. Over 500 trainees and faculty participated in the event, reflecting strong industry engagement.
The day also commemorated the historic voyage of ‘S.S. Loyalty’ on April 5, 1919, which marked India’s entry into global shipping.
