The 5th Joint Group of Customs (JGC) meeting between India and Bhutan convened from May 6–7. The discussions aimed at bolstering cooperation across various fronts.
The meeting, co-chaired by Surjit Bhujabal of India and Sonam Jamtsho of Bhutan, addressed crucial bilateral issues. These included the establishment of new land customs stations, the identification of fresh trade routes, infrastructure development, and the modernization of transit processes.
Bhutan lauded India for its unwavering support, particularly in capacity building for Bhutanese customs officials. Both nations expressed gratitude for initiatives fostering cross-border trade and economic activity.
India-Bhutan trade relations have flourished, with India being Bhutan’s top trading partner. Trade volumes have seen a significant surge, reaching $1,615 million in 2022–23, reinforcing the importance of land customs stations for the landlocked nation.
The meeting concluded on an optimistic note, with both nations pledging to explore new avenues of cooperation. They emphasized the need to adapt to evolving technologies and social innovations while meeting the expectations of their youth.
This collaborative effort underscores India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Act East’ policies, emphasizing the significance of fostering stronger ties with Bhutan for mutual prosperity.
