The Central Government temporarily exempts all customs duties on cotton imports from June 1 to October 31, 2026 to ease supply constraints for the textile sector.

The Central Government announced on May 30, 2026 that it will temporarily exempt all customs duties on the import of cotton with effect from June 1, 2026 until October 31, 2026. The measure has been introduced to augment the availability of cotton for the Indian textile sector and is expected to reduce input costs across the textile and apparel industry, providing targeted relief to manufacturers and consumers while keeping the interests of domestic farmers in mind.
The government stated that the duty exemption is anticipated to have a positive impact on the performance of the domestic textile industry, particularly small and medium enterprises, by ensuring better availability of cotton in the market during the exemption period.
