Local production surges; 99.2 percent of mobile phones now made in India

India has emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturing hub, growing from just two units in 2014 to over 300 operational facilities nationwide. The ‘Make in India’ initiative has driven this transformation, significantly reducing import dependence.
In 2014-15, only 26 percent of mobile phones sold in India were locally produced, whereas today, 99.2 percent are made domestically. The sector’s manufacturing value has skyrocketed from ₹18,900 crore in FY14 to ₹4,22,000 crore in FY24, with exports exceeding ₹1,29,000 crore.
Beyond mobile phones, India is deepening its electronics manufacturing value chain, producing key components like chargers, battery packs, display modules, and semiconductors. The sector has generated 12 lakh jobs over the past decade.
The government’s semiconductor push, backed by the India Semiconductor Mission, is setting the foundation for a robust chip manufacturing ecosystem. With major projects by Micron, Tata Electronics, and CG Power, India is positioning itself as a global leader in electronics production.
