India’s port digitisation drive under Sagarmala promises efficiency, transparency, and global competitiveness.
The Government of India has intensified efforts to digitise port operations, aiming to enhance efficiency, transparency, and the ease of doing business in the maritime sector. This initiative is a critical component of the “Port Modernisation” pillar under the Sagarmala Programme.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced the launch of NLP Marine, a one-stop IT platform connecting all logistics stakeholders. The platform includes the Maritime Single Window (MSW) and Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) Modules, which streamline the exchange of maritime information and standardise data submission processes for better efficiency.
Additionally, the National Safety in Ports Committee (NSPC) application, launched during the 20th MSDC meeting in Goa, is now integrated with the National Single Window System. This digital tool simplifies regulatory procedures, reducing costs and enhancing efficiency for stakeholders.
The digitisation of port operations is expected to lead to significant improvements, including reduced turnaround times, cost savings, higher productivity, and improved supply chain management. These advancements will strengthen India’s global competitiveness, ensuring smoother international trade and supporting the national economy.
This transformative initiative reaffirms India’s commitment to modernising its maritime sector and fostering a globally competitive trade environment.
