GTI and JNPA collaborate to pilot shore power, cutting vessel emissions at Nhava Sheva port.
Gateway Terminals India (GTI), also known as APM Terminals Mumbai, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) to initiate the piloting of shore power supply (SPS) at the port. This initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions from vessels during their port stay, aligning with APM Terminals’ global decarbonization goals.
According to the official release, the shore power facility will initially draw electricity from the national grid. Eventually, the port may opt to purchase green energy through open access to further enhance sustainability. The SPS will be capable of powering two ships simultaneously, effectively eliminating the need for diesel usage at the port and reducing noise pollution.
Sahar Rashidbeigi, Global Head of Decarbonisation at APM Terminals, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This agreement demonstrates our commitment to deploying technology at scale to tackle emissions. Shore power presents an opportunity to save 40-60 percent of fuel and associated emissions during port calls.”
The agreement, signed on August 22, 2024, in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, underscores a significant step forward in enhancing air quality and reducing environmental impact at JNPA’s Nhava Sheva port, where GTI operates under a 30-year licence to provide container handling services.
