CMA CGM and Suez sign MoU to boost biomethane production for greener shipping.
CMA CGM Group and Suez, a global leader in circular waste management, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to form a long-term industrial partnership focused on biomethane. This renewable fuel, produced from waste recovery, will aid in reducing carbon emissions in the shipping industry across Europe.
Key elements of the agreement include Suez supplying up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane annually by 2030 for CMA CGM’s gas-powered vessels. Additionally, both parties will invest €100 million to establish biomethane production facilities, initially in Europe. These plants will supply CMA CGM and other industry players, contributing to the sector’s decarbonisation.
Joint research and development efforts will focus on advancing biofuel production technologies, including hydrothermal gasification. CMA CGM aims for Net Zero Carbon by 2050, with 131 low-carbon ships expected to be operational by 2028. Suez, through its circular waste solutions, converted five million tonnes of waste into energy in 2023, highlighting its role in the energy transition.
