CMA CGM and Nike join forces to drive sustainable shipping, aligning with CMA CGM’s Net Zero 2050 strategy.
French shipping giant CMA CGM has announced a strategic collaboration with global sportswear leader Nike to spearhead a green initiative aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of their maritime transport. This partnership mirrors CMA CGM’s overarching strategy for decarbonisation, with a vision to achieve Net Zero by 2050 while supporting clients in their own supply chain decarbonisation efforts.
In a joint effort, Nike will procure sustainable biofuel for a significant portion of its maritime transport, a move deemed crucial in advancing the eco-friendly goals of both companies. Commencing from July 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024, Nike plans to utilise sustainable biofuel for 36 percent of its volume shipped with CMA CGM. This strategic step is anticipated to result in a substantial reduction of 25,000 tonnes in CO2 emissions, a noteworthy stride toward greener and more sustainable operations.
Olivier Nivoix, Executive Vice President of CMA CGM Group Lines, expresses confidence in this collaborative endeavor with Nike, seeing it as a pivotal achievement in the journey towards decarbonisation. The success of this initiative is expected to serve as a catalyst, encouraging other carriers and customers to embrace sustainable practices, expediting the transition to a Net Zero industry.
CMA CGM Group actively supports its customers in decarbonising their supply chain through the ACT WITH CMA CGM+ range of low-carbon solutions. Launched in 2020, this initiative empowers customers to assess their environmental footprint, mitigate carbon emissions through low-carbon alternatives like biofuel, LNG, and biomethane, and offset residual emissions through impactful environmental projects. This partnership exemplifies the commitment of both CMA CGM and Nike to foster sustainability in the maritime industry.
