Advanced survey vehicles to support road maintenance.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has announced the deployment of Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) equipped with advanced 3D laser-based systems across the National Highway network. The vehicles use laser profilers, GPS and imaging technology to collect detailed information on road inventory and surface conditions, helping identify defects such as potholes, patches and surface irregularities.
According to the ministry, the technology enables surveys of up to 300 km per day compared with 20 to 80 km under earlier survey methods. Data collected by the NSVs is transmitted to a centralised system and uploaded to NHAI’s AI-based Data Lake portal for analysis and monitoring. The initiative also includes a mobile application that allows site inspectors to view survey findings, upload geo-stamped photographs and track rectification activities, supporting data-driven maintenance of National Highways.
