As geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to cast a long shadow over global trade, India is taking decisive steps to shield its export ecosystem from mounting economic headwinds.

The government has activated a high-level inter-ministerial task force and a structured weekly monitoring mechanism to track emerging trade vulnerabilities in real time. From soaring packaging costs to disrupted shipping lanes, key sectors including apparel, leather, and medical devices are feeling the pressure. With ports now directed to ramp up operational efficiency, India’s trade machinery is firmly on high alert.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has additionally announced the rollout of a structured weekly monitoring mechanism, designed to systematically track export-import trends and identify sector-specific stress signals. The initiative comes in direct response to the rising concerns among the exporting community over supply chain disruptions, logistical bottlenecks, and the steep rise in input costs and challenges, fuelled by the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
In a decisive policy response to the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia, the Indian government has constituted a dedicated inter-ministerial group to closely track the region’s geopolitical developments and assess their potential impact on the country’s trade and economic interests. The move was confirmed by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, showcasing the Indian administration’s proactive approach to safeguarding India’s export and import ecosystem.
Additionally, exporters raised significant concerns regarding the escalating costs of packaging materials and the increasing disruptions in international shipping routes, particularly those servicing the West Asia corridor. Industries including apparel, leather, telecom and optical fibre, and medical devices were identified as being especially vulnerable to these compounding pressures.
In a parallel development, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has issued directives to all ports and terminal operators across the country, calling for immediate measures to enhance transparency and improve operational efficiency.
