Maharashtra fast-tracks development of India’s largest shipyard, aiming for 2026 completion, alongside a new electric Mumbai Water Metro.

Maharashtra is making an aggressive push in the maritime sector, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis instructing officials to fast-track the development of what is slated to become India’s largest shipyard. Leveraging the state’s extensive coastline and the anticipated deep-draft Vadhavan Port, the project is positioned as a strategic cornerstone for India’s national shipbuilding ambitions.
During a review meeting of the Ports Development Department held at Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur, Fadnavis directed senior officials to expedite work on the Detailed Project Report (DPR), improve coastal connectivity, and focus decisively on achieving the 2026 completion target. Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane, Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal, Additional Chief Secretary (Transport & Ports) Sanjay Sethi, and senior Maharashtra Maritime Board officers were present at the discussion.
Water metro project fast-tracked
In parallel with the shipyard initiative, the chief minister called for the rapid development of the proposed Mumbai Water Metro. This modern system is conceived as an all-electric, water-based commuting service. Fadnavis emphasised that the project must set a new standard, exceeding the benchmarks established by existing services, such as the Kochi Water Metro. This involves deploying a larger scale, incorporating upgraded vessel technology, and providing superior passenger amenities.
The administration was directed to implement a phased rollout for the Water Metro, starting with hybrid vessels before fully transitioning to an all-electric fleet. This upgraded water taxi and metro system, according to the Chief Minister, will support the state’s broader maritime development vision, enhancing urban mobility and simultaneously reducing pollution across Mumbai’s waterways.
The dual focus on creating the country’s biggest shipyard and rolling out an advanced electric Water Metro underscores Maharashtra’s strategy to establish itself as a national maritime leader. The plan combines world-class shipbuilding capabilities with sustainable urban transport solutions.
