Nitin Gadkari confirms new electronic, barrier-less toll collection system rollout, ending physical stops on Indian highways by next year.

On December 4, 2025, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari declared that a totally electronic, barrier-less system would replace the current toll collection system nationwide within a year. The goal of this project is to give highway users a smooth experience.
The minister said during the Lok Sabha’s Question Hour that the new electronic toll collecting system has already been effectively implemented at ten locations and will be progressively expanded nationwide within a year.
The Minister promised the current toll system would soon conclude. “Nobody will be able to stop you in the name of toll,” he declared, adding that an electronic collection system will be installed nationally within a year.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) created the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) initiative, which powers the new technologically advanced system. Its main component is a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) gadget called FASTag, which allows automatic toll payments from a user’s associated account without requiring the car to stop at a plaza.
Additionally, Gadkari told Parliament that approximately 4,500 roadway projects totalling ₹10 lakh crore are presently being built nationwide.
