Cochin Shipyard, India’s largest shipbuilder by dock capacity, is planning a new shipbuilding facility at Cochin Port through a foreign collaboration. The initiative aligns with the government’s push for expanding shipbuilding capacity, following recent budgetary allocations aimed at revitalising the sector.
The port authority, which holds 150 acres of prime land, is expected to lease a portion to Cochin Shipyard for the project. This follows the shipyard’s commissioning of a ₹1,799 crore dry dock and a ₹970 crore international ship repair facility at Willingdon Island.
Industry experts stress the urgency of increasing domestic capacity, as global shipyards in China, South Korea, and Japan remain booked until 2028. The government is also developing maritime clusters and leasing land at key ports to fast-track shipyard expansion. With India targeting a top 10 spot in global shipbuilding by 2030, the Cochin facility is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the nation’s maritime footprint.
