Mazagon Dock is constructing India’s largest floating dry dock at Nhava Island, Mumbai, with a Rs 5,000 crore expansion plan.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd has launched the construction of India’s largest floating dry dock at Nhava Island, near Mumbai. This ambitious project, part of a Rs 5,000 crore expansion plan, aims to accommodate large ship orders. The contract worth Rs 475 crore has been awarded to Shoft Shipyard for building the floating dry dock, which will measure 180 meters in length, 44 meters in width, and 19.5 meters in height.
The dock is being constructed in six blocks, which will be towed to the Nhava jetty for assembly and launch. Four blocks have been completed at Shoft Shipyard’s Bharuch facility, with the remaining two expected to be finished soon. These blocks are anticipated to reach the Nhava jetty by March. The facility will be operational by the end of the year, with a capacity to dock vessels up to 12,800 tons and handle up to eight ships simultaneously.
In addition to the floating dry dock, Mazagon Dock plans to invest over Rs 1,000 crore in developing a 40-acre facility at Nhava, including jetty development, dredging, and related infrastructure. Furthermore, the company is planning a new shipbuilding and repair facility on a 15-acre plot leased from the Mumbai Port Authority, which will include a 180-meter graving dry dock and other advanced facilities.
