The letter of intent states that Debo will start producing green methanol in September 2024, with an annual production of roughly 200,000 tonnes. For us to successfully make the switch to sustainable energy, a large-scale supply of green methanol is essential, as per Jens Eskelund, China Chief Representative of Maersk. We are eager to expand our partnerships with Chinese partners because of their enormous potential to produce green methanol.
“Using green methanol as fuel is a huge step forward for the maritime industry. As general manager of Debo, Zhang Shoujun said, “It is an honour to collaborate with Maersk to jointly promote the commercial operation of the green methanol industry chain.”
In 2024, Maersk will introduce the first in a series of its large ocean-going container vessels capable of being operated on carbon neutral methanol built by Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Maersk has previously signed LoI’s with six companies – CIMC ENRIC, European Energy, Green Technology Bank, Orsted, Proman, and WasteFuel – for at least 730,000 tonnes of green methanol by 2025.
