IWAI takes major steps to enhance inland water transport with approvals for NW-2, NW-64, and regulatory changes.

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has approved a development plan for National Waterway-2 (Brahmaputra River) and cleared several key proposals in its 197th Board Meeting. The plan includes infrastructure upgrades, fairway development, green energy adoption, and skill-building initiatives across Assam’s waterway network.
A proposal to construct a link road connecting the upcoming Ship Repair Facility to Pandu Terminal on NW-2 was approved, aiming to ensure seamless logistics movement and connectivity to NH-27. The Board also endorsed amendments to the 2022 classification regulations, refining jetty-to-channel distance norms.
Further, NTCPWC, IIT Madras will prepare a DPR to extend NW-64 from Odisha to Chhattisgarh. IWAI also approved new posts under a restructuring plan by NISG. The Board reviewed ongoing inland waterway initiatives in Jammu & Kashmir, which include infrastructure development across three national waterways in the region.
