IMHC 2024 highlights India’s maritime legacy, global role, and sustainable future at a two-day event in New Delhi.
The 1st India Maritime Heritage Conclave (IMHC 2024), organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, concluded successfully on December 12, 2024. Held in New Delhi, the landmark event celebrated India’s rich maritime history and its pivotal role in shaping global trade, culture, and innovation.
With the theme, “Towards Understanding India’s Position in Global Maritime History,” the two-day conclave brought together ministers, maritime experts, and dignitaries from 11 countries to explore India’s illustrious seafaring past and its forward-looking vision for sustainable maritime innovation. Keynote sessions, panel discussions, and exhibitions highlighted India’s maritime prowess, from its 7,500 km coastline and 1,200 million-tonne cargo capacity to its 95% trade volume via waterways.
A significant highlight was the focus on the upcoming National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, showcasing ancient shipbuilding and bead-making techniques from the Harappan civilisation with its 5,000-year-old dockyard. This project underscores India’s maritime heritage and its role as a global connector.
The conclave also emphasised India’s commitment to a sustainable blue economy, skill development, and youth engagement to propel the maritime sector forward. Countries like Greece, Italy, and the UK joined hands to celebrate this global legacy.
From ancient traditions rooted in the Rig Veda to modern advancements in ports and shipping, IMHC 2024 reaffirmed India’s position as an emerging maritime powerhouse, blending its rich history with an ambitious roadmap for the future.
