Evergreen Marine Corporation collaborates with X-Press Feeders to propel Europe’s first green methanol-powered feeder network, signifying a remarkable stride towards sustainable shipping practices.
Evergreen Marine Corporation, a global container shipping giant, has inked a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with X-Press Feeders, the world’s largest independent common carrier, to deploy containers on X-Press Feeders’ innovative dual fuel green methanol vessels.
This move aligns with Evergreen’s commitment to sustainability, as the dual-fuel ships will run on green methanol, sourced through a firm contract with Dutch supplier OCI Global.
The collaborative effort extends to establishing Europe’s inaugural feeder network powered by green methanol. Initially stationed at the Port of Rotterdam, these dual-fuel ships will cover ports in the Baltic Sea and Scandinavia. X-Press Feeders plans to operate 14 such vessels, scheduled for delivery from Q2 2024 through mid-2026, ultimately serving Europe and the Mediterranean.
Green methanol, recognised as a renewable energy source derived from organic decomposition, is ISCC-EU certified. X-Press Feeders, dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aims for a 20 percent reduction by 2035, 50 percent by 2040, and net-zero emissions by 2050.
Francis Goh, X-Press Feeders’ Chief Operating Officer, emphasises the urgency of taking substantial steps today to meet emission reduction targets. The companies encourage various stakeholders in the shipping industry to join their sustainable shipping initiative, fostering collective efforts towards a greener future.
