DP World Cochin records 17% growth in 2024, boosting capacity to 1.4 million TEUs, driving trade and sustainability.
DP World Cochin has achieved a record-breaking throughput in 2024, handling an all-time high of 840,564 TEUs, reflecting a remarkable 17% growth compared to the previous year, according to an official release. Enhancing its infrastructure, DP World Cochin expanded its capacity to approximately 1.4 million TEUs annually, establishing itself as one of the largest terminals in South and East India.
Key upgrades included the introduction of advanced STS (Ship-to-Shore) cranes, electrified RTGs (Rubber Tyred Gantry cranes), and expanded yard space, supported by upgraded power infrastructure for reliable operations during peak demand. These efforts not only enhanced productivity but also minimised the carbon footprint, offering customers a sustainable advantage in cargo movement.
In 2024, the terminal handled 657 vessel calls, including multiple Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) over 365 meters in length, and achieved its largest single vessel exchange of 6,157 TEUs with MSC Aurora. These milestones underscore the terminal’s ability to handle larger vessels and greater volumes, solidifying its role in the region’s trade growth.
Praveen Joseph, CEO of DP World Ports & Terminals, Cochin, expressed gratitude to customers, partners, and the Cochin Port Authority, emphasising DP World’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. He stated, “DP World Cochin remains a vital hub for regional trade, and we are poised to build on this success for greater milestones ahead.”
Additionally, DP World launched the 75,000 sq. ft. Cochin Economic Zone, Kerala’s first FTWZ and India’s first economic zone within a major port, enabling seamless connectivity with the terminal. This development enhances South India’s position as a key trade gateway and promotes port-led economic growth in the region.
Offering direct mainline connectivity to regions such as the Far East, Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia, the terminal facilitates faster and more reliable transit, bypassing congested hubs. Regular connections to transshipment hubs like Singapore, Colombo, and Jebel Ali further boost its strategic importance.
DP World reiterated its commitment to safety, innovation, and delivering world-class solutions, positioning Cochin as a critical player in global trade.
