The second Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC), carrying 700 metric tons of cargo for Numaligarh Refinery’s capacity expansion project, has arrived at Pandu Port in Guwahati. The cargo was transported from Kolkata to Guwahati through the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route and the Brahmaputra River, utilising inland waterways.
This movement of ODC is made possible by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Numaligarh Refinery and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). It marks a significant milestone for cargo transportation in the inland waterways of Northeast India. A total of 24 such ODCs will be transported through this medium, showcasing the growing importance of waterways in the region’s transportation infrastructure. Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the role of inland waterways in supporting Assam’s growth and emphasised the government’s commitment to promoting waterways as an efficient and sustainable mode of transportation.
