The Letter of Intent covers ship reflagging, sustainable recycling infrastructure, and strategic collaboration on the development of Vadhavan Port.

Hapag-Lloyd and the Government of India have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to deepen maritime cooperation across three key areas: the reflagging of up to four Hapag-Lloyd vessels under the Indian registry, the development of a sustainable ship recycling ecosystem, and strategic collaboration on Vadhavan Port in partnership with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority.
On ship recycling, the intended cooperation aims to build capacity aligned with the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, the leading international standard, with the envisioned ecosystem capable of recycling up to 100 vessels. On Vadhavan Port, Hapag-Lloyd intends to contribute its global shipping and terminal expertise to support what is expected to become a significant node in India’s maritime logistics network.
Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, said India is one of the most important growth markets in global trade and a key strategic partner. Hapag-Lloyd currently employs more than 2,800 people across 17 offices in India, operates six dedicated liner services connecting India to major global trade lanes, and aims to grow volumes handled in the India area to approximately 3 million TEU by 2030.
