Government intensifies turmeric export growth via quality, market linkage, and product development initiatives.

The Government of India, through the Spices Board, is advancing turmeric exports under the “Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development (SPICED)” scheme. The initiative covers food safety certification, post-harvest quality upgrades, value addition, and training for stakeholders to boost product quality and entrepreneurship.
Quality checks in dedicated labs ensure compliance with importing nations’ standards, while domestic and international buyer-seller meets foster direct market access.
To further leverage turmeric’s global potential, the National Turmeric Board, established in October 2023, is tasked with promoting product innovation, market research, supply chain resilience, and infrastructure development for exports. It also focuses on skill-building for growers, traditional knowledge preservation, and research on turmeric’s medicinal benefits.
India’s share in global turmeric exports reached 66% in 2024, with key buyers including Bangladesh, UAE, USA, Malaysia, and Morocco. Maharashtra emerged as the top exporting state in 2024-25, contributing $155.35 million to export revenue. The measures aim to strengthen India’s leadership in the international turmeric market.
