The Cabinet greenlights the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, Gujarat, in phases.
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat. The project, aimed at showcasing India’s 4,500-year-old maritime heritage, will be executed in multiple phases.
Phase 1A is currently under construction with over 60 percent progress and is expected to complete by 2025. The next phases, including Phase 1B and Phase 2, will be developed through public-private partnerships and voluntary contributions. The Light House Museum under Phase 1B will be funded by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL).
A governing society led by the Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways will manage the future phases. The project promises significant employment opportunities, generating around 22,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct and 7,000 indirect.
This initiative will benefit tourists, researchers, local communities, and various organisations, further boosting regional growth. Phase 1A includes galleries, naval artefacts, and a replica of the ancient Lothal township.
