MoPSW marks International Day for Women in Maritime, celebrating women’s vital roles and contributions.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) celebrated the International Day for Women in Maritime in New Delhi, honouring the significant contributions of women seafarers. The theme for this year, “Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety,” emphasises the crucial role of women in ensuring maritime safety and security.
During the event, 27 women seafarers, including students from various maritime institutes and professionals, were recognized for their dedication and significant contributions to the maritime industry. These women represent the strength and resilience needed to excel in a traditionally male-dominated field, paving the way for future generations.
Secretary T K Ramachandran remarked, “On this International Day for Women in Maritime, we honour the invaluable contributions of women in the maritime sector. Their dedication and expertise are crucial as we navigate towards a more sustainable and equitable future.”
The celebration underscored gender equality as a critical pillar for a sustainable future, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.
Over the past nine years, the number of seafarers has surged by 140 percent. In 2014, the total count of active Indian seafarers was 117,090, which rose to 280,000 in 2023. The Directorate General of Shipping had approximately 1,699 registered women seafarers in 2014, increasing to 10,440 in 2023, reflecting a 514 percent rise. As of May 15, 2024, there are 13,371 registered women seafarers, with 4,770 active as of December 31, 2023.
