Tanker and tugboat crews recognized for bravery in saving lives during emergencies.
Two heroic crews received the 2024 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea during the annual IMO Awards ceremony in London on 2 December 2024. The award recognized Captain Avhilash Rawat and the crew of the oil tanker Marlin Luanda for their courageous firefighting efforts after an uncrewed aerial device struck the vessel, causing a massive fire. Despite the risk of further attacks and critical damage, they contained the fire, ensuring the safety of the crew and securing the ship.
Similarly, Captain Jorge Fernando Galaviz Fuentes and the crew of the tugboat Pemex Maya were honored for their remarkable rescue of six shipwrecked individuals during Hurricane Otis in October 2023. The crew navigated treacherous conditions, saving lives under extreme circumstances.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez praised both teams for their selfless acts of bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives at sea, even in the face of grave danger.
