Shanghai Port surpasses 50 million TEUs in annual throughput, setting a global record.
Shanghai Port has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, surpassing 50 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) in annual container throughput for the first time, setting a global record in port container transport history. The celebratory container, draped in festive red, marked this historic achievement as it was loaded onto a deep-sea liner on December 22.
“This milestone represents a new era for the Shanghai International Shipping Centre,” stated Gu Jinshan, Chairman of Shanghai International Port Group, during a symposium commemorating the achievement.
Operating nearly 350 international shipping services and connecting over 700 ports in more than 200 countries, Shanghai Port has maintained its global connectivity leadership for 13 years consecutively. In addition, Yangshan Port has ranked first on the Global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for two straight years.
In 2024, the port’s international transshipment volume saw a remarkable 20 percent year-on-year growth, with transshipment figures expected to exceed seven million TEUs. Innovations such as the Shanghai Port Intelligent Command Centre and digitalised logistics services have further enhanced efficiency, promoting paperless, contactless, and transparent operations.
This historic achievement underscores Shanghai Port’s pivotal role in global trade and reaffirms its position as a leader in international shipping.
