The AQCS at Cochin International Airport is set to enhance the import process for pet owners and boost livestock and fishery exports.
Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, George Kurian, inaugurated the new Animal Quarantine & Certification Service (AQCS) at Cochin International Airport (CIAL) on October 10, 2024. This facility is expected to streamline the import of pets and improve export processes for livestock and fishery products, supporting economic growth in Kerala.
The new AQCS facility, dedicated to ensuring the safe import of pet dogs and cats, aligns with the government’s broader “Ease of Living” initiative. It also aims to boost trade by improving the efficiency of livestock and fishery product exports. During the event, Minister Kurian encouraged stakeholders to provide feedback on enhancing the import and export processes, which could further strengthen the region’s economic activity.
To support this initiative, Cochin International Airport has introduced several facilities, including a 24-hour air-conditioned pet station, a dedicated cargo section, veterinary support, and a customs clearance center. These services will simplify the import of live animals and expedite related procedures for exports.
An agreement was signed between the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, represented by Varsha Joshi, Additional Secretary, and CIAL, to operate the quarantine facilities. CIAL’s Managing Director, S. Suhas, emphasised that this service will greatly benefit travellers importing pets and contribute to smoother operations for livestock and fishery exports.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, under the Livestock Importation Act of 1898 (amended in 2001), manages the import of livestock, focussing on preventing the entry of exotic diseases. Currently, AQCS stations are located at six major entry points across India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The new facility at Cochin Airport will provide pet owners and exporters a more convenient and cost-effective option for animal imports and exports in Kerala.
