Major ports adopt ‘HaritSagar’ guidelines for reducing carbon emissions through renewable energy and green initiatives.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has launched the “HaritSagar” Green Port Guidelines, outlining a robust framework for major to achieve sustainable development and reduce carbon footprints. The guidelines encourage various green initiatives, including increasing renewable energy usage, electrifying port equipment, adopting alternate fuels for port crafts, installing EV charging stations, and developing LNG and hydrogen bunkering facilities.
As per the HaritSagar Guidelines, major ports are currently establishing baseline carbon emission data for 2023. The reduction targets will be monitored through the percentage reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of cargo handled.
Over the past five years, major ports have undertaken significant measures to lower carbon emissions, including the electrification of port equipment, ship-to-shore power supply for port crafts, and increased reliance on renewable energy through solar and wind energy generation. These efforts reflect a steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability and green transformation within the maritime sector.
