Albert Maersk, part of a green fleet, marks a milestone in Mumbai.

Maersk named its latest dual-fuel methanol container vessel, Albert Maersk, in Mumbai, marking the first such event by a foreign shipping company in India. The vessel is the eleventh in Maersk’s fleet to operate on methanol, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping.
The naming ceremony, hosted by Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc, saw participation from government officials, diplomats, and industry leaders. Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted India’s potential as a green fuel producer and praised Maersk’s investment in sustainable maritime solutions. Clerc reiterated Maersk’s focus on decarbonisation and announced a $5 billion investment in India’s port infrastructure.
Built in South Korea, Albert Maersk is among 18 large dual-fuel vessels set for delivery by 2025. Running on bio- and e-methanol, these ships align with Maersk’s net-zero target for 2040, reducing emissions by at least 65% compared to traditional fuels.
