Indian Railways marks another milestone in April 2024, loading 128.29 million tonnes of freight.
Indian Railways continues its streak of record-breaking freight loading, reaching 128.29 million tonnes (MT) in April 2024, surpassing last year’s 126.45 MT. This achievement marks the 55th consecutive month of the highest-ever freight loading since October 2020.
In terms of revenue, freight earnings for April 2024 amounted to INR 14,075.14 crore, up from INR 13,893.27 crore in April 2023. The breakdown of freight loading includes 57.64 MT of coal, 14.88 MT of iron ore, 5.24 MT of pig iron and finished steel, 6.79 MT of cement, 4.75 MT of clinker, 3.85 MT of food grains, 4.01 MT of fertilisers, 4.16 MT of mineral oil, 6.57 MT of containers, and 9.54 MT of other goods.
During the fiscal year ending March 2024, Indian Railways loaded a total of 1591 MT of freight, an increase from 1512 MT in the preceding fiscal. The fiscal also witnessed significant achievements in railway electrification, new lines, and track replacement.
Highlighting the ‘Hungry For Cargo’ initiative, railway officials attributed this success to efforts aimed at enhancing service delivery at competitive prices, further strengthening Indian Railways’ position in freight transportation.
