India successfully ships first-ever sea consignments of pomegranates to Australia, strengthening agricultural exports.

India has achieved a significant milestone in its agricultural exports with the first-ever commercial sea shipments of premium pomegranates to Australia. Facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with AgroStar and Kay Bee Exports, this move expands India’s market access for fresh produce.
The shipments followed India’s market access agreement with Australia in 2024, with the first air consignment sent in July. Encouraged by demand, sea shipments commenced to optimise cost efficiency. The initial consignment, carrying 5.7 metric tons of Solapur-sourced pomegranates, arrived in Sydney on January 13, 2025. Another shipment of 6.56 tons reached Brisbane on January 6.
The exports leveraged India’s ANARNET traceability system, ensuring transparency and quality assurance. The strong market response has spurred additional orders, reinforcing India’s potential in global agri-trade. APEDA remains committed to expanding international opportunities for Indian farmers, strengthening bilateral trade with Australia.
