India and the U.S. move closer to a Bilateral Trade Agreement, with sectoral talks set to begin virtually in the coming weeks.
India and the United States have concluded a four-day trade dialogue in New Delhi, marking a step forward in their goal of expanding bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. The discussions, held between India’s Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office from March 26-29, focused on shaping a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).
Both nations have reached a broad understanding on the next steps, with plans to finalise the initial phase of the agreement by fall 2025. Sectoral expert-level engagements will commence virtually in the coming weeks, setting the stage for in-person negotiations.
Key discussion areas included enhancing market access, reducing trade barriers, and strengthening supply chain integration. These developments follow earlier meetings between top trade officials in Washington and ongoing virtual discussions. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening economic ties and fostering a mutually beneficial partnership.
