India Maritime Heritage Conclave celebrates India’s seafaring legacy with global experts and insightful discussions in Delhi.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) hosted the inaugural India Maritime Heritage Conclave 2024 (IMHC) on December 11-12, 2024, at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, Delhi NCR. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the conclave in the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Chief Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel, and other dignitaries.
This landmark event brings together global experts, researchers, and practitioners to explore India’s 10,000-year-old maritime heritage. With insightful sessions, compelling narratives, and interactive discussions, the conclave highlights India’s historic contributions to global trade, navigation, and cultural exchange.
Key Highlights of the Conclave
- Exploring Maritime History: Sessions will delve into ancient ports like Lothal and Muziris, trade routes, and the impact of monsoon navigation on global maritime commerce.
- Showcasing Coastal Culture: Unique traditions, cuisine, sports, and the artistic influence of India’s coastal states will be celebrated.
- Advancing Conservation and Innovation: Discussions on sustainable maritime practices, ocean health, marine biodiversity, and responsible resource use will be featured.
Day 1 Themes:
The first day included keynote addresses on India’s maritime legacy, ancient shipping networks, and environmental influences on coastal communities. Panel discussions explored India’s trade with Greco-Bactrian and Roman worlds, oceanic mythologies, and the European influence on maritime commerce.
Day 2 Themes:
The second day focuses on advancements in traditional shipbuilding, the evolution of naval power, the Cholas’ maritime contributions, and lighthouse infrastructure under the Sagarmala program. Special segments include stitched boat construction techniques and insights into the upcoming National Maritime Museum at Lothal.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasised, “Our rich maritime heritage is not just our past but a guide for our future. This conclave reinforces India’s commitment to maritime conservation, innovation, and global leadership, in line with the Prime Minister’s vision of India as a ‘Vishwaguru.’”
