India aims for 10,000 MTPA port capacity by 2047: Sonowal

India’s Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, revealed plans to elevate port capacity to over 10,000 MTPA by 2047 from the current 2,600 MTPA. Speaking at the Maritime State Development Council meeting, he stressed the need for enhanced port security and the upcoming establishment of the Bureau of Port Security. 

Sonowal highlighted investment opportunities of Rs 10 lakh crore, expected to generate employment for 15 lakh individuals. The government aims to boost private investment in public-private partnership terminals from 50 percent to 85 percent. Hydrogen hubs are envisioned across government-controlled ports, with Gujarat’s Deendayal Port Authority already signing MoUs worth Rs 1.68 lakh crore. The Global Maritime India Summit 2023 is set for October 17-19.
