Collaboration aims to prevent double issuance and improve certificate management in sustainable aviation fuel registries.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and 123Carbon have announced a strategic partnership to ensure interoperability between their Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) registries. This initiative will enhance transparency, reduce emissions reporting errors, and streamline certificate management across SAF platforms.
The collaboration focuses on three key aspects: developing a unique identifier for data exchange, establishing a process to prevent double issuance, and implementing a dispute resolution mechanism. IATA’s Senior Vice President Sustainability, Marie Owens Thomsen, emphasised that interoperability fosters trust and efficiency, encouraging wider industry alignment.
Jeroen van Heiningen, Managing Director of 123Carbon, highlighted the partnership’s role in ensuring integrity within Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) across multiple transport sectors. The initiative will enable SAF providers, airlines, and corporate entities to manage certificates digitally while preventing duplication.
IATA and 123Carbon plan to engage additional SAF stakeholders to further integrate registries, strengthening the aviation sector’s decarbonisation efforts.
