India ramps up shrimp exports with upgraded fishing harbours near major ports.
The government is enhancing shrimp exports through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), focusing on modernising fishing harbours and reducing post-harvest losses. Over the past five years, Rs 3,490 crore has been allocated under the scheme to improve infrastructure and increase productivity.
To strengthen the export value chain, projects near major ports like Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Paradip, Cochin, and Mumbai have been sanctioned, with 100% financial assistance under PMMSY, converging with Sagarmala. These upgrades aim to support sustainable growth and streamline marine product exports.
The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) is also promoting shrimp exports through production and processing improvements. As a result of these efforts, India achieved a record seafood export of 17,81,602 metric tonnes, valued at Rs 60,523.89 crore, during the 2023-24 financial year. The government’s continued focus on infrastructure is expected to further boost shrimp container exports.
