Indian government advises enhanced reporting and security measures for vessels in West Asian waters.
In a recent circular, the Directorate General of Shipping (Mumbai) urged ship managers, masters, and seafarers to bolster reporting and tracking mechanisms, particularly in sensitive zones like the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Vessels transiting these areas are required to submit details via an online Ship Reporting Form.
The directive emphasises timely communication with the Indian Navy and coalition warships in case of security incidents, utilising VHF Channel 16. Additionally, comprehensive security drills are recommended to address piracy and other threats.
This advisory follows the recent seizure of the Israel-affiliated container vessel MSC Aries by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard in the Strait of Hormuz. The MSC is coordinating with authorities for the crew’s safety, which includes Indian nationals. India is actively engaging with Iran for the release of its citizens amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel.
