Odisha CM fast-tracks greenfield airports in Puri & Paradip, with major upgrades across regional aviation hubs.

In a decisive move to boost Odisha’s air connectivity, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the fast-tracking of greenfield airport projects in Puri and Paradip, alongside upgrades at key aviation sites including Rourkela airport.
At a high-level review meeting on air connectivity and aviation network management, CM Majhi emphasised the vital role of enhanced regional air access in driving trade, tourism, and inclusive growth.
Key Developments:
- The transport department has invited AAI to bid for developing the Shree Jagannath International Airport in Puri.
- The Paradip airport, first announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari with a ₹200 crore investment, will be developed under the B-MAAN (Building Management of Aviation Assets and Network) initiative.
- AAI to initiate land surveys for the Paradip site to assess land needs and feasibility.
Paradip’s prominence as a major port and industrial hub makes the airport project strategically crucial for freight and industry movement.
Additionally, the runway at Rourkela airport is set for expansion to enhance operational capability.
Regional Connectivity Drive:
- Upgradation is planned at airstrips in Jeypore, Dandbose, Rangeilunda, Gautama, Satibhata, Raisuan, Tushara, Jamadarpali, Malkangiri, Amarda Road, and Utkela.
- 15 new heliports approved across districts to strengthen rural and remote access.
- Green light given for the Biju Patnaik Aviation Centre (BPAC) and Birashola airstrip in Dhenkanal.
The Works Department has been appointed as the nodal agency to ensure faster execution of all aviation-related infrastructure.
CM Majhi also called for:
- Modernisation of existing airports to accommodate rising passenger and cargo demand.
- Engagement with airline operators to increase flight frequencies.
- Restructuring of the Directorate of Civil Aviation to scale up capacity, efficiency, and human resources.
The sweeping measures reflect Odisha’s strategic vision to become a regional aviation hub by aligning infrastructure with its broader developmental roadmap.
