The NPG assesses transformative railway infrastructure projects to enhance multimodal logistics and regional economic growth.
In a crucial step towards enhancing India’s freight and transportation infrastructure, the Centre’s Network Planning Group (NPG) met to evaluate key railway projects aimed at improving connectivity, industrial logistics, and socio-economic development.
One of the standout projects discussed was the 185 km Ballari – Chikjajur Doubling, which aims to connect the Ballari, Chitradurga, and Anantapur districts. This project will significantly boost the movement of vital goods like iron ore, coal, cement, and food grains, benefiting industries like Jindal Steel as it expands production to 24 million tons per annum (MTPA). The project will also create employment opportunities, reduce transportation costs, and attract investments, thus fostering socio-economic growth in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The 147 km Hosur – Omalur rail line doubling project was another focus of the NPG meeting. This route will connect Hosur, an agro-industrial hub, with the commercial centre of Salem in Tamil Nadu. By strengthening links with the Bangalore electronics and IT corridor, the route will facilitate the transport of goods for industries such as cement manufacturing, agro-processing, and automobiles.
Another important project reviewed was the 173.18 km Secunderabad – Wadi Quadrupling, which aims to construct third and fourth lines between Secunderabad and Wadi, critical for freight and passenger transport in South Central India. This project will help alleviate congestion, improve freight efficiency, and support industries such as cement, steel, and food grains.
These projects align with the PM GatiShakti initiative and are expected to drive industrial growth, enhance multimodal connectivity, and support the transportation needs of the nation.
